As a Musical Theatre enthusiast, I don't really need an excuse to talk Musical Theatre. but this week has handed me the perfect excuse to talk about one of my all-time favourite movies and musicals, Grease. This is one of the first musicals that I was really into when I was younger, Cats being the other one (I know weird mix right?) and I wanted to be just like Sandy. So the excuse I have been given to indulge in my love for grease is that on this day in 1978 John Travolta and Olivia Newton John went to No.1 on the US and UK singles chart with 'You're The One That I Want.'

For those very few people (I hope there's very few of you anyway!) that haven't seen Grease, it's set in the late 50's. The two main characters Danny and Sandy meet over the summer and fall in love. At the end of summer they believe they will never see each other again because Sandy has plans to go back to her Native Australia. Little do they know the universe has other plans. This is a tale of finding yourself and realising that you don't need to change who you are to please other people, or fit into a group.

The music in this film is somewhat iconic and there's not really a song throughout this whole film that I dislike. The song that we're going to focus on is 'You're the One that I Want'. This is the penultimate song in the movie in which Danny and Sandy (SPOILER ALERT) finally get together. It is sexy and fun and I just love it. They both want to impress each other and show that they can be perfect for one another which results in Danny turning up to the carnival in a Letterman jacket and Sandy wearing a sexy outfit of leather pants, off the shoulder top and leather jacket.

While they want to impress each other, due to the way that Danny has treated her in the past Sandy wants Danny to "shape up" to be the man that she deserves. This song is a dialogue between two people who are in love and who want to be the best version of themselves for each other, treating each other with respect and love. We can't talk about this song and not talk about the dancing which is almost as iconic as the song itself. In particular, the scene in the 'Shake Shack' in which John and Olivia are almost doing a shimmy, and holding on to each other looking into each others eyes. Then when the exit the 'Shake Shack' they put their hands on their hips and box step down the stairs. I LOVE IT!
Anyway enough of my gushing! Here is a clip for you to explore and I would highly recommend watching the film if you have the time!
