Song of the Week: 'Voulez-Vous' by ABBA

This week in 1979 ABBA started a four week stint at Number one in the UK Album chart with 'Voulez-Vous'. The title track of this album is one of my favourites so I decided to delve into it a little deeper.

'Voulez-Vous' was released as a single on the 2nd July 1979 just 10 days before the infamous Disco Demolition Day was held in Chicago. The Disco Demolition Day was cooked up by a disgruntled radio DJ named Steve Dahl who lost his job after his station went to an all-disco format, as Disco had become so popular. Dahl managed to convince White Sox promoters, who had had dwindling ticket sales, to offer admission to the game for less than $1 if fans brought a disco record to burn. While Disco wasn't the only music to be burnt that day, records by black and gay artists were also targeted, Disco did take a little bit of a hit and this could be the reason that this much loved ABBA track didn't scale the heights in the international charts as their previous releases did.

My favourite thing about this song is how the verses build so perfectly to the chorus. Then when we get to the chorus it's peppered with little trumpet motifs and "a-ha"s. It is a perfect song to bop around to and it is definitely one of my favourites!

Go give it a listen!
